There's a reason why politicians should not be trusted – both sides. They share many of the same characteristics as psychopaths, but “usually stay within the law”.(1) I'd say that still holds true (generally) for those on the right of the aisle, but not for the Left. They went off-road a while back.
The life's work of a Dr Lobaczewski (published as Political Ponerology) hits the nail on the head. In his view, we are in a specific place in a recurring cycle that lurches between 'happy' times and 'unhappy' times and it is the very character of these times that ensures that neither become a permanent state; the seeds of downfall are an integral part of the cycle.
Happy times (or, perhaps more usefully, 'undisciplined times') are when life is good and the milk and honey are in plentiful supply but, gradually, morality is suborned and intellectual rigor is abandoned. Society becomes disordered; excess and depravity are increasingly the norm. Hysteria is symptomatic of the dog days of happy times. Political psychopathy of a malign strain, one which is unconstrained and has no hesitation in destroying norms and operating outside the law becomes pre-eminent. This strain infects those members of society who are already primed for behavioral deviance by virtue of their character.
“Hysterical times may generate moral and intellectual sloppiness, illogical political arguments, pathological dishonesty, social conflict, and economic disruption. Latent social divisions arise and are encouraged as a means of political control.”(2)
Western democracies are not fertile ground for pathocracies (a psychopathic system), which is why the lurch into authoritarianism is so jarring, but that doesn't mean that a huge amount of damage can't be inflicted before the course is corrected. In the US, the elites are riding roughshod over the Constitution and the laws that spring from it. The same thuggery is being accomplished by the UK, the EU and the rest of the Anglosphere.
The citizen support they receive is from a substantial minority with little in the way of morality or mental stability; these people enable the top-down psychopathy. Most people (I would estimate that the sensible cohort comprises around 80% of a population) are not taken in. The looney-tunes enablers as of now are the teachers, journalists and judges of Leftist persuasion, which may seem odd given that they might typically be assumed be some of the smarter members of society, but possessing a high IQ does not confer immunity to psychopathy. And when psychopaths get their hands on the levers
“...the result is totalitarianism, also known as pathocracy. At that point, the government operates against the interests of its own people except for favoring certain groups.”(3)
Hence, in the US, we see ever-increasing public debt, illegal behavior (elections, the 'pandemic', political corruption) and the demonisation of at least half the country. The theory holds that pathocracies always fail eventually and the sensible majority then restores morality and intellectual rigor and the cycle continues on its merry way. While these cycles are decades-long, I get the impression that gradual becomes sudden when we are on the cusp of change.
I like this theory, not least because it is reassuring on two levels; firstly, that we've been here before and, secondly, that there is a corrective somewhere in our future. The theory was fleshed out over many years, behind the Iron Curtain, and it mirrors research that was also taking place in the Free World. The psychopathy that is described (I have usually referred to it as sociopathy in my writings) and its effects on our societies is as good an explanation as any of our current predicament.
“As the world's worst mental disorder, psychopathy has no hope of prevailing, but the destruction itself presents an attraction to sick minds. It should be obvious after thousands of years that psychopaths always fail and psychopaths and psychopath enablers have an agenda they do not share with their vulnerable followers and which they may themselves be unaware [of].”(4)
A need for control is the driver of psychopathy. Nothing about it is geared towards achieving beneficial goals; in fact, given the sickness of the mind, the exact opposite outcome is highly likely. There is no compassion and no way to explain the actions that are taken, other than by this diagnosis. And the psychopathy manifests itself in numerous ways.
It has been clear, for some time now, that there are two main types of people; one is a monolithic blob and the other is a group whose membership profile is much more nuanced. Figure 1, the voting records of members of the US Senate, captures the distinction well.
Figure 1
That is the visual representation of an ideology versus, broadly speaking, a political philosophy; the former a rigid adherence to a set of rules or beliefs that are not required to have any basis in reality, with the latter representative of a pragmatic approach in looking at and analyzing life. Temperamentally, the differences are stark. Ideologies are the preserve of the Left, because people with a particular character are natural purveyors of the authoritarian approach. They are also much more likely to be anxious, unhappy and desperate to control their surroundings.
Figure 2
I would contend that the only people still voluntarily wearing masks would be so-called liberals; in which case, we can be almost certain of their views on the following hot button issues - climate change, Israel/Hamas, Ukraine, Trump, free speech, immigration, George Floyd/Derek Chauvin and trans rights. While those of us opposed to the liberal world view may not all be natural bedfellows and our belief systems may appear incoherent, we can usefully stake out a position that is in opposition to Leftist lunacy without necessarily labeling that position. If we are anti-dishonesty, anti-hectoring and pro-critical thinking, then however that attitude may be pigeon-holed matters not.
Facts, not feelings, are much more likely to be our currency. I've recently read an article that denigrated this saying. The gist of it was that we must find another way to bring such people round, by appealing to their feelings. I think the truth is far simpler than that. It's not some epic dilemna of Reason v Faith; it's about personality. And an assumption that, with the right approach, everyone can be led to the light. But, in the real world, what can be done with people whose world view is overwhelmingly formed by feelings? Nothing.
It would require a personality transplant. We all have feelings. The difference is that some get feelings after they've seen the facts and some get them before. The cohort that can still be persuaded are those that use reason, but have been mislead. They're the ones who can be red-pilled by a different set of facts. Those who don't make any use of facts are lost to us and we should stop pretending otherwise.
By way of example, in early 2017, 67% of Democrats thought that Trump had stolen the election, on the basis of no evidence whatsoever.(5) Then, when an election really was stolen and there is plenty of evidence to show just that, they get a fit of the vapors and bang on about a threat to DemocracyTM. And while I imagine that this percentage may have decreased since Russiagate was shown to be a hoax, there will still be some true believers. These are the people that aren't worth bothering with, because stupid and hypocritical are for life. In fact, anybody currently comfortable with self-identifying as a Democrat after three years of Biden must, by definition, be the enemy.
However, as I have previously asserted, the ostensible policies of Leftists are simply vehicles to attain power. They don't have to make sense; in fact, forcing people to accept the blatantly nonsensical is more fulfilling to the Leftist. It's all about the constant struggle to control:
“... leftism is a totalitarian force because of the leftists’ drive for power. The leftist seeks to satisfy his need for power through identification with a social movement and he tries to go through the power process by helping to pursue and attain the goals of the movement. But no matter how far the movement has gone in attaining its goals the leftist is never satisfied, because his activism is a surrogate activity. That is, the leftist’s real motive is not to attain the ostensible goals of leftism; in reality he is motivated by the sense of power he gets from struggling for and then reaching a social goal. Consequently the leftist is never satisfied with the goals he has already attained; his need for the power process leads him always to pursue some new goal.”(6)
The effects of Leftist psychology are scatter-gun, but widespread. Even if I limit myself to the very recent, the impression is that peak crazy is imminent. In Poland, the new Prime Minister (Donald Tusk) has wasted little time in confirming that he is an unpleasant individual who is willing to precipitate a constitutional crisis, simply to get his own way. Firstly, he illegally arrested two political opponents who had taken refuge in the Presidential palace, for alleged crimes that they had already been pardoned of. Then, when massive protests failed to persuade him to release them, he announced that he considered himself unconstrained by both internal judicial decisions and EU law if they were contrary to his own personal views.(7)
In the US, which is the scene of some of the most egregious examples of random acts that have no relationship to decency or the law, an American citizen living in Kiev is allowed to die in Ukrainian custody, having been tortured and then neglected while suffering from double-pneumonia and edema.(8) Gonzalo Lira's crime? Criticizing Zelensky, which morphs into 'disseminating pro-Russian propaganda' in a country where the right to free speech counts for nothing. But Lira wasn't in tune with the Biden administration's thinking, so they reneged on their responsibilities and simply abandoned him to his fate.
In Finland, a state prosecutor is trying to convict a lawmaker of 'hate speech' because she posted a verse of scripture online.(9) He's lost in both the lower court and the appellate court but, in true authoritarian double-down style, is now taking the matter to the Supreme Court. Holding faith-based views on marriage and sexual ethics is now to be considered a blasphemy “against the dominant orthodoxies of the day,”(10) according to Leftist extremists.
In Brighton, England the local council now fines people for putting the 'wrong' type of rubbish in a bin. Apparently, this is part of a nationwide 'crackdown' on 'improper waste disposal'. One poor woman was fined £400 for putting cardboard in a box intended for some other type of rubbish. However, she got off lightly compared to a homeowner from Essex, who had the temerity to drive across town and disposed of rubbish sacks in communal bins.
He hadn't sorted them, you see, for which sin he was fined £1,000.(11) Sorting is a task that has become increasingly onerous – residents of Bristol now have to sort their rubbish into 13 separate bins.(12) And woe betide the Good Samaritan who cleared her street of litter (a job that Camden Council are responsible for) and then deposited said litter into a green wheelie bin – that, too, is an offence worthy of a £400 stipend to the council.(13)
Now we hop back to the good old US of A, and the Leftist insistence that graphic porn novels are inserted into high school libraries. This, despite the fact that doing so violates guidelines against sexually explicit material being provided to minors. The guidelines are simply openly ignored and books such as Gender Queer are left in place. For those of a sensitive disposition, look away now.
Figure 3
Staying on the other side of the pond, we encounter the dunderheads at the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), who are currently leading the race for the most outrageous DEI initiative. They are specifically trying to recruit people with the following disabilities:
“Hearing (total deafness in both ears), Vision (Blind), Missing Extremities, Partial Paralysis, Complete Paralysis, Epilepsy, Severe intellectual disability, Psychiatric disability, Dwarfism.”(14)
Presumably, they'll be a shoo-in for an Air Traffic Controller role. United Airlines is also doing its bit for the DEI/ 'Let's make sure that it's increasingly dangerous to travel by air' agenda by partnering with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). Graduates of the colleges get an affirmative action, jump-the-queue-type opportunity to interview for pilot jobs. Unfortunately, there's a slight question mark hanging over the plan, as Twitter/X user enunciated:
“The average IQ of USAF pilots is about 120, and the figures I've seen for major airline pilots range from 115 to 130. By contrast, the mean IQ of grads from two of those United Airline HBCU "partners" is about 85 to 90, based on the average SATs at those schools. (The SAT correlates reasonably well with IQ.) To put this into context, the HBCU IQ averages are within 10 points of the threshold for what is considered "borderline intellectual impairment," while the pilots IQ averages are within 10 points of what is considered "intellectually gifted." I'll add that IQ is a well-studied and well-known predictor of job performance, especially for quick-processing and mentally-demanding occupations like major airline pilot.”(15)
But, DEI feelings are way more important that facts, so anybody dunking on the HBCU is automatically bigoted, regardless of the truth of the matter.(16) America is also home to other DEI ultras, including the ignoramus responsible for John Hopkins' subject output. She thought it was acceptable to circulate this email to all the members of her team:
“Privilege is a set of unearned benefits given to people who are in a specific social group....white people...able-bodied people...heterosexuals....cisgender people....males....Christians...middle or owning class people....middle-aged people...English-speaking people. Privilege is characteristically invisible to people who have it.”(17)
If this was a game of Bullshit Bingo, I'd be on my feet shouting “House”. She hit all the tropes effortlessly. Regrettably (for her, anyway), at least one member of her team appears to have less receptive than hoped for and leaked the email to Twitter/X. She was obliged to issue an 'apology' in short order:
“The newsletter included a definition of the word “privilege” which, upon reflection, I deeply regret. The intent of the newsletter is to inform and support an inclusive community at Hopkins, but the language of this definition clearly did not meet that goal. In fact, because it was overly simplistic and poorly worded, it had the opposite effect of being exclusionary and hurtful to members of our community...”(18)
Which is simply a hot mess all round. It wasn't poorly worded; it was perfectly clear what she meant and she is, after all, the DEI officer and these views are core to that role. She's only sorry because she got caught. But, because she fell on her sword so swiftly, she will survive and will continue to spread the cancer; just not in writing, perhaps. And another thing; it seems there is some kind of mechanical, box-ticking formula here. Do this exact thing and, by our rules of the game, you simply get a booking, not a red card. Yet it's perfectly obvious that this is what she truly believes.
The same dynamic played out with the recent problems of the Harvard president, Claudine Gay – a woman who, given the paucity of her academic achievements, appeared to have been the very embodiment of a DEI hire.
Figure 4
She managed to fall short on two matters; firstly, she gave a dumpster fire of an answer to Congress on the subject of campus anti-Semitism, and then it was discovered that she had plagiarized considerable chunks of what little work she'd published. After a protracted struggle, she was invited to resign by the board, who only realized that there was a genuine problem when they exited their gilded cage and headed home for the holidays, whereupon some real people filled them in on what everyone thought about the scandal.
But, even so, she remains a member of the faculty and she keeps her $900,00 a year salary, a circumstance not well publicized. Her defenders in the media assert that “Gay’s champions insist that the provenance of the plagiarism accusations matter, and that is no doubt true.”(19) To which the correct response is 'no, it absolutely isn't'. This is typical effective Leftist thinking. The messenger is unimportant – it's the evidence provided that matters. But to the Left, the ad-hominem attack is all they have, so they have to legitimise it. Plus, they are temperamentally inclined in that direction.
They will also eat their own, especially if one of their number deviates from the agreed script. A Democrat lawmaker in New Hampshire found this out the hard way, when he voted with Republicans to ban irreversible sex change operations for minors. He was still at pains to burnish his liberal credentials, but that didn't help him one whit:
“The question before us is whether or not children under the age of 18 should be able to get these surgeries. And despite being a liberal who believes in [trans] rights, I don’t think that is the case...I’ll take all the heat that comes from this.”(20)
The progressives were outraged. They surrounded him in the House ante-room; Republicans felt the need to hover in case he needed physical protection. The lawmaker didn't back down which, as we know, enrages Leftists even more. Democrats issued so many threats to wards him that House security had to step in and he was obliged to change seats to one where the exit was more accessible. Apparently, it isn't the first time that he's been targeted by his own side, either.
Figure 5
The Democrat in the second picture thought it was acceptable to harangue the gentleman in the first (the lawmaker, Jonah Williams), using the 'n word' on multiple occasions, despite him repeatedly asking her to stop. That was enough to persuade her to call security. None of this should be a surprise.(21) 'Trans rights' are, after all, an article of faith for the Leftist and the lunacy keeps getting more and more extreme. Two current examples illustrate the kind of end-of-times territory we occupy.
In Scotland, the ruling Leftist SNP have proposed that parents who won't allow their children to 'change gender' – a patently impossible task, the pursuit of which normalizes gender dysphoria and child mutilation – could go to prison for up to seven years. A parent preventing a boy from dressing as a girl (presented as 'conversion therapy') would become a criminal.(22) Not to be outdone, the Crown Prosecution Service in England has decreed that refusing to pay for a partner's 'transition' could now be considered domestic abuse;(23) yet more reminders that Leftists will meddle in every aspect of society:
“Leftism is a totalitarian force. Wherever leftism is in a position of power it tends to invade every private corner and force every thought into a leftist mold [sic]. In part this is because of the quasi-religious character of leftism: everything contrary to leftist beliefs represents Sin.”(24)
The allegedly conservative UK government is, in reality, an assemblage of quislings. Green parties are always Leftist in nature and yet Sunak's Conservatives not only supported the passing of the Climate Change Act in 2008 (only five voted against it in the Commons), but enthusiastically prosecuted its terms over the past thirteen years of unbroken rule. The Prime Minister, under pressure in the summer, promised “a more pragmatic, proportionate and realistic approach that eases the burdens on families”,(25) a commitment he patently had no intention of keeping, because changes in the law would be required.
And so it proved. Just before Christmas, while we were distracted by the holiday season, the government released its hydrogen plan, yet another foray into illogicality and magical thinking. The plan to produce hydrogen (via the deployment of methane) uses nearly twice as much energy as it creates and will cost around £241 per MWh. For context, UK Natural Gas is trading at around £33 per MWh or, more than seven times cheaper,(26) and still four times the price of US gas. They will then inject much of it back into the gas grid. This is the polar opposite of smart, especially as UK consumers already pay the highest energy bills in the world:(27)
“In short, this is a crime against thermodynamics. It makes no sense at all to take methane, use it to produce hydrogen and then blend that hydrogen back into the gas network. It adds cost, reduces efficiency and will increase consumer bills.”(28)
Not to mention, the entire climate change narrative is a huge lie. Even if it wasn't, it still doesn't make any sense:
“Only a tiny fraction of the world’s heat resides in the atmosphere. If the atmospheric temperature rose by a huge 27°C and all that heat was then transferred to just the first 72 metres of the ocean, it would only be enough to raise sea temperatures at that level by 1°C.”(29)
American progressives are also intent on doubling and tripling down on their absurd narratives. Therefore Ray Epps, one of the two most visible agitators at the January 6th 'insurrection' – a man who, the previous evening, was filmed trying to persuade people to breach the Capitol building and who used violence on the day itself – and an obvious government asset, was sentenced to just a year's probation, a $500 fine and 100 hours community service, despite helping to hurl a sign at police. Eight other persons, who also touched that sign, are still in jail. Two people who weren't even at the Capitol are serving sentences of 18 and 22 years.(30)
Figure 6
Figure 7
Derek Chauvin likewise languishes in jail for a killing he did not commit. Once again, facts don't care about our feelings, so whether we have formed a dim view of Chauvin or not, the evidence is definitive:
“Chauvin was accused of a modern-day lynching, but mob justice is what Chauvin received. Basic facts about his case were left out of the political narrative fed to the masses in the intervening years. The media did not cover the crucial bodycam video of Floyd’s prolonged, violent struggle with two, then three police officers before he was even placed on the ground. Nor did the media cover the coroner’s report showing severe blockages in Floyd’s coronary arteries, or the toxicology report showing high levels of meth and fentanyl in his system, which the medical examiner said would have been enough to classify his death an overdose if he had been found alone at home...”(31)
Additionally,
The medical examiner, Andrew Baker, admitted in a separate federal civil rights trial of the other three officers involved that he experienced an avalanche of threats after Floyd’s death. Baker, who originally found no sign of injury to Floyd’s neck, says he was not pressured to change anything in his autopsy report, but Sweasy [formerly the county prosecutor] testified that Baker expressed concern for his career if he strayed from “the narrative.” In his final report, Baker declared Floyd’s death a “homicide” resulting from police “subdural, restraint and neck compression.”(32)
In Japan, in the aftermath of a 7.5-magnitude earthquake, refugees have been sleeping in centers which have kept their doors open overnight (in midwinter), due to a whopping total of three Covid cases. They are also obliged to wear their masks while sleeping. Japan's zero-risk Covid approach dictates that any mitigation, no matter how self-defeating, is a boon to health.(33)
Back in the States and a Muslim imam from Wisconsin had this to say about Jews during a sermon at his local community center:
“By Allah, all of them will be killed by Muslims. They all will be executed by Muslims. They will all be killed, this is a divine promise that will inevitably be fulfilled. This is a promise from Allah and it is going to happen. They will all be killed. They will all be killed, and on that day, the believers will rejoice in Allah’s victory.”(34)
He also urged jihad on multiple occasions. I know that this looks like 'hate speech' or, in our world where 'hate speech' is simply subjective, it instead sounds like incitement to murder Jews, but actually; it isn't. It's de facto protected speech, because the Jews are the oppressor and the 'Palestinians' are the oppressed and that's the only metric that's important. Leftists and Islamists are brothers from another mother – illogical, intolerant and hateful.
My last anecdote from this whistle-stop tour through the madness of the Leftist universe, concerns a gentleman (Brandon) in the US who thought that it was a good idea to go all in on SMART technology and, effectively, hand the keys to Amazon. Apparently, a delivery driver was dropping off a package and he reported that he had been in receipt of racist remarks from the Ring doorbell.
Amazon, girding its loins as the self-appointed, modern-day arbiter of free speech, suspended Brandon's account without so much as a by-your-leave, much less some form of contact with him, leaving him locked out of all his devices for a week; while his subsequent investigation swiftly demonstrated that the entire affair was bogus, Amazon still dragged their feet for several more days before his account was restored, without notice or apology. Brandon felt that Amazon should have done better (obviously), but no other lessons seemed to have permeated into his consciousness.(35)
So, what are we to do while we wait the psychopaths out? Appeal to their better nature? That course of action will not be of any utility, as they don't have a better nature. They can't think critically, nor face reality, nor deal with opposition. They don't play by the rules. Nothing we do will ever be good enough, because they will never reach a destination with which they are happy. They will continually defend the indefensible. So, we have a choice to make.
In my view, Karl Popper's theory, the Paradox of Tolerance, is the guide to live by in this regard:
“If everyone is tolerant of every idea, then intolerant ideas will emerge. Tolerant people will tolerate this intolerance, and the intolerant people will not tolerate the tolerant people. Eventually, the intolerant people will take over and create a society of intolerance. Therefore, Popper said, to maintain a society of tolerance, the tolerant must be intolerant of intolerance… hence the paradox.”(36)
It seems that we have erred in exactly the way Popper describes. Perhaps, given our disposition, this was inevitable – at least, in part. We may well have changed our approach before now were it not for the fact that we are led by donkeys, whose specialties are subservience and rooting around for the crumbs from the Leftist table.
I am aware that it's only a paradox in a theoretical sense, because tolerance should not exist in a vacuum; there must also be some strain of morality, so that when we are intolerant of intolerance, there is a valid reason for it. For my part, I haven't been encumbered by any impression that I need to be tolerant of people who are seeking to do me down. Whilst politeness is a quality to be treasured, being polite to bullies (because that's what they are, in essence) will rightly be viewed as weakness.
I much prefer the robust approach, deployed immediately. Firstly, they're not expecting someone to challenge them straight off the bat; being told they are a despicable human being who needs to Foxtrot Oscar before they are made to, tends to have a sobering effect. Secondly, an absolute refusal to observe the rules of their game can be discombobulating to the Leftist. I will not give a single inch on anything and I will rag on them to my heart's content, because I genuinely don't have any interest whatsoever in what they are saying (or trying to do) and I have absolutely no respect for them. I know that the psychopath is always scheming, that even if whatever it is that they are proposing seems to benefit me, it will benefit them instead in the long run.
What's more, I feel no shame in acting as I do. The Leftist isn't obligated to try and screw us over; it's something they first decide they're going to do and then attempt. In my eyes, that's two infractions, not one and, whatever else it is, the attempt will be a direct attack on my personal autonomy. That makes me angry, as I'm in the business of fairness and I have a huge problem with people who aren't. So, my encounters with Leftists tend to be short and sweet. I don't attempt to persuade them that they're wrong – I just tell them to go and bother someone else, now.
I would imagine that this approach is almost certainly part of the reason that the commonsensical majority eventually rescues itself from pathocracy. That and the fact that the Leftists' excesses are becoming increasingly wanton and it's obvious that the Clown World that they are trying to impose on us cannot possibly function. And it seems to me that nothing is lost with the robust approach and much is gained.
For the Leftist, there is the knowledge that the battle lines are right there, front and center and that their usual MO is simply not going to be effective. But it has to be a line that is maintained. Folding like a cheap suit is obviously problematic, but so is holding out for aeons and then surrendering, something that Senator Tuberville recently accomplished, when he refused to let top Pentagon officials be confirmed in position without individual votes, as a protest against the military illegitimately reimbursing the travel costs of troops seeking abortions. He held out for eleven months and then gave up the battle without winning any concessions, which will make the next rebellion much more painful. He'd have been better off leaving well alone if he wasn't going to see it through.(37)
Perhaps alone among nations, the Hungarians sense what the West is going through. During their oppression under the Soviets, they looked to America for comfort, seeing the republic as something of a 'light on the hill'. But now, they see the woke agenda, progressivism and the Biden administration's verbiage as direct lifts from the communist play-book. They sense that America (and, necessarily, the rest of us in the West, also) is on the brink.(38) Viktor Orbán believes that the EU is also at risk:
“Today, things pop up that remind us of the Soviet times. Yes, it happens that history repeats itself. Fortunately, what once was tragedy is now a comedy at best. Fortunately, Brussels is not Moscow. Moscow was a tragedy. Brussels is just a bad contemporary parody.”(39)
Perhaps it's time for us all to become much more disagreeable and intolerant of those that seek to harm us. Maybe, in so doing, we can staunch the bleeding and bring the course correction forward in time.
